So you have a lot of followers?

Turns out they’re here for my blood sugar.

Why following matters, what your job is, and how to set it up.

Why following matters

My sensor takes a reading every 5 minutes. When you follow me, you see the same number, trend arrow and graph I see, and you can get alarms when I’m running low or high. Most of the time that just means you know I’m fine.

If something is ever really wrong, like my blood sugar reading too low for too long and I’m not waking up, someone might need to call 911. That has never happened, but it’s why I want people following me.

“If someone’s calling me in the middle of the night to check on me, I want it to be someone who’s willing to help.”Haley
Your part

Your job as a follower

Following comes with four small jobs.

Pick one

3 ways to follow me

Pick the first one that works for you.

  1. 1 · No Nightscout needed

    Dexcom Follow

    ★ Easiest to set up

Dexcom’s own sharing: one email invite from my Dexcom app and you’re in. It doesn’t use Zukka or Nightscout, so it keeps working if either one is down.

    Phone
    iPhone or Android
    Alarms
    Yes, set per follower
    Needs
An email invite from my Dexcom app
  2. 2 · iPhone

    Zukka app

The same graph I see on my phone, with alarms you set for yourself. It’s set up once and never needs touching when I change sensors.

    Phone
    iPhone
    Alarms
    Yes, you set your own
    Needs
My Nightscout URL + read-only token
  3. 3 · Any device

    Nightscout website

For Android phones, computers, or a quick look. Nothing to install: open the one-tap link I send you.

    Phone
    Any phone or computer
    Alarms
Only while the page is open
    Needs
    My one-tap link

Good to know: ways 2 and 3 only update while my phone is online, since my Zukka app does the uploading. Dexcom Follow keeps working if either one is down.

Step by step

Set it up

Way 1 · the easiest

Follow with Dexcom Follow

  1. I open the Dexcom app, tap the Share icon and follow the screens.
  2. I tap Invite Followers and enter your email, then pick your alerts and whether you see the graph.
  3. You install Dexcom Follow (iPhone or Android) and open the email invite.
  4. Tap Start Following.

Way 2 · about five minutes, once

Follow in Zukka

For an iPhone. You’ll need my Nightscout URL and my read-only token; I’ll send you both.

On your iPhone

  1. Install Zukka from the App Store. When asked, allow notifications and critical alerts so alarms sound even on silent.
  2. Open Settings and set the data source to Follower.
  3. Choose Nightscout as the follower source.
  4. Enter my Nightscout URL, then the read-only token in the token field.
  5. Go back to the home screen and wait a few minutes. My latest reading and graph should appear.
  6. Set your alarms. Start with my recommended settings. They change only your phone, never mine.
  7. Leave Zukka running in the background. Don’t force-quit it, or alarms stop.

Optional: on your Apple Watch

  1. Install the Zukka watch app from the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Allow Zukka notifications on the watch.
  3. Add the Modular Duo face with the Zukka graph at the bottom.

Menu names follow xDrip4iOS and may differ slightly in Zukka.

Way 3 · any device

Follow on the Nightscout website

  1. Open the one-tap link I send you: my Nightscout URL with /?token= and my read-only token on the end. There’s no login.
  2. Save it: in Safari tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. In Chrome, use the menu and Add to Home screen.

Nightscout can sound alarms in the browser, but only while the page stays open.
